Rita
Carratello & I enjoyed the Nutting's Flycatcher Myiarchus nuttingi
experience in Mason Regional Park, Orange County, on 26 Dec 2000. There
are already fabulous resources about this first California record on Joel
Weintraub's and on Joe
Morlan's web sites with many great photos and detailed directions to
the bird. During my visit it was almost as much fun watching the bird-watchers
(left) as the bird. I particularly like the photo at the bottom of this
page showing the moment that everyone gets on the bird -- yes, yes, yes,
yes, er, well, almost everyone....
There are already plenty of shots of this Myiarchus on the web. Those shown here were taken in natural light (no flash and at a distance) with Kodachrome 200 film, and may show true colors reasonably well. Of particular interest is the one (below left) that shows the spread tail and appears to me to show that the central rectrices are in molt and only half-grown. I had not noticed this in the field.
